Concert Pieces

We are currently rehearsing the following classical pieces for our upcoming concert:

Don Giovanni Overture in D, K. 527 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)
Don Giovanni is an opera that premiered in 1787 and is considered one of the greatest operas of all time. It tells the story of Don Giovanni, a legendary libertine and seducer, and explores themes of love, morality, and the consequences of one's actions. The overture is a musical reference to a scene in Act II where the statue of the Commendatore breaks into Don Giovanni's dining room and gives him a final chance to change his ways. This foreshadows Don Giovanni's eventual demise.
Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129 - Robert Schuman (1810 - 1856)
The Cello Concerto was completed in a period of only two weeks, between 10 October and 24 October 1850, shortly after Schumann became the music director at Düsseldorf. The concerto was never played in Schumann's lifetime. It was premiered on 23 April 1860, four years after his death, in Oldenburg, with Ludwig Ebert as soloist. Cranbrook Sysmphony Orchestra is excited that Matthew Sharp will be our soloist for this performance.
Sympnony No. 104 in D Major (London) - Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
The Symphony No. 104 is Joseph Haydn's final symphony. It is the last of the twelve London symphonies, and is known as the London Symphony. The work was composed in 1795 while Haydn was living in London, and premiered there at the King's Theatre on 4 May 1795, in a concert featuring exclusively Haydn's own compositions and directed by the composer.
